USA - Tax - Indirect Tax - Value Added Tax (VAT) - Intern - Summer 2026

The opportunity

Join our dynamic EY Tax team, where our global expertise and deep technical knowledge across all tax disciplines are enhanced by the latest in innovation and cutting-edge technology. We pride ourselves on exceptional client service, strong accountability, and governance, making us the top choice for industry executives and the largest revenue-generating US and global tax practice.

Our Indirect Tax practices navigate the complexities of state and local taxes, which often constitute a company's largest tax burden and are on the rise globally. Our approach helps businesses understand their tax liabilities, identify risks and opportunities, and align with their broader tax strategy, reinforcing the critical role of tax and finance in the modern business landscape. Learn from our experienced professionals, cutting-edge technology, and proven methodologies to effectively manage our clients’ indirect tax posture.

Your Key Responsibilities

EY US VAT Practice supports US multinationals with their VAT position outside the US. VAT stands for Value Added Tax, and most countries outside the US apply this tax on the supply of goods and services.

You will work together with the many different nationalities, including Dutch, British, Brazilian, Romanian, and on a day-to-day basis you will be in contact with our foreign EY offices. It’s hard to find a job that’s more international than working in the VAT practice.

As an Intern in our VAT practice, you will:

  • Support senior team members throughout client engagements by understanding client needs, collaborating with foreign EY offices, drafting deliverables, and managing administrative tasks like engagement economics and invoicing.

  • Focus on three key areas:

  • Automations Support: Assist clients in implementing compliant systems for VAT input and output, ensuring accurate invoicing and reporting.

  • Advisory Services: Provide insights on client activities and supply chains, including reviewing agreements, drafting technical memos, and creating transaction flow diagrams.

  • Compliance & Reporting: Aid clients with VAT compliance outside the US by monitoring filing deadlines, reviewing data, and overseeing VAT returns prepared by our Global Delivery Services Team.

  • Develop a solid understanding of VAT principles and global systems, enhance your technical skills, and stay informed on VAT trends to better serve clients.

  • Manage multiple projects effectively, prioritizing tasks and tracking progress across various engagements.

  • Contribute to team success by mastering EY’s methodologies and tools to improve service delivery.

Skills and attributes for success

To qualify for the role, you must have

  • A predicted undergraduate or graduate degree with a concentration in Finance, Economics, International Business, or a related field; or an advanced degree in Tax or Law; supported by a strong academic record.
  • Have an interest in international business and taxation.
  • Demonstrate interest in learning about VAT and actively invest time in your personal development.
  • Comfortable to work on topics you’re unfamiliar with, but you’re eager to understand and grasp them.
  • Excellent communication skills, proficiency in basic MS Office tools, and strong writing skills, with business fluency in the English language.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  • The ability and willingness to travel and work in excess of standard hours when necessary. In certain circumstances, travel may be required beyond your work location based on client and project needs.
  • Access to reliable transportation to/from the EY office and client sites. A driver’s license is strongly recommended as ride share and public transportation options may not be available in all locations.

Ideally, you will have

  • Proficiency in a technology-enabled environment.
  • Knowledge of how to leverage firm-approved AI tools in a business setting, including Microsoft Copilot.

Please note this position is not able to consider candidates with an Accounting major who have plans to pursue the CPA.
