Your Key Responsibilities

As a Severance Tax Intern, you will collaborate with oil and gas clients to identify severance tax incentives and deductions. You will spend your time working on a diverse array of projects, responsibilities, and tasks. You will be working in a highly collaborative culture where active listening and information sharing with colleagues are an essential part of the role.

As an Intern in our Indirect practice, your role will include:

  • Building a broad base of knowledge and technical competence by staying current on trends, developments and technical authorities, applying them to complex situations impacting severance taxes.

  • Collecting, entering, and performing data calculations.

  • Utilizing data tools such as Excel, Access, Alteryx and other data tools to manage and analyze data effectively.

  • Building client relationships, demonstrating knowledge of client business and delivering high-quality, timely services that exceed client expectations.

  • Managing multiple projects simultaneously with efficiency and attention to detail.

  • Demonstrating professionalism through a positive and cooperative attitude, while maintaining the confidential and proprietary nature of client relationships and related work products.

  • Contributing to team success by mastering EY methodologies and tools to enhance service delivery.

Skills and attributes for success

To qualify for the role, you must have:

  • An anticipated undergraduate or graduate degree with a concentration in Finance, Economics, or a related field supported by a strong academic record.

  • 3.0 cumulative college/university GPA.

  • Excellent communication skills, with proficiency in basic MS Office tools, and strong writing abilities.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

  • An interest working in our team-led and leader-enabled hybrid model. Our expectation is for most people in external, client serving roles to work together in person 60% of the time over the course of an engagement, project or year.

  • Access to reliable transportation to/from the EY office and client sites. A driver’s license is strongly recommended as ride share and public transportation options may not be available in all locations.

  • The ability and willingness to travel and work in excess of standard hours when necessary. In certain circumstances, travel may be required beyond your work location based on client and project needs.

  • You must either reside in or be in a commutable distance to Houston, TX, for this position.

  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. without the need for employer sponsorship, now and in the future.

Ideally, you will have:

  • Cumulative college/university GPA of 3.2 or above.

  • Knowledge of the oil and gas sector.

  • Eligibility to sit for the COPAS APA designation.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Access and Alteryx.

  • Knowledge of how to leverage firm-approved AI tools in a business setting, including Microsoft Copilot.

  • The hourly pay range for this job, in the US, is $39.90 per hour. Individual salaries are based on education, geographic location, and alignment to the market data.
