USA - Tax - Business Tax Services - Federal Tax Advisory (FTA) - EDGE STEM R&D Credits - Chemical Engineering - Intern - Summer 2027
Will you shape the future or will the future shape you?
The opportunity
Join EY’s dynamic Tax practice, where deep technical expertise is combined with advanced technologies and innovation to deliver exceptional client service. As part of our Business Tax Services (BTS) group, you’ll work with a diverse portfolio of clients, from chemicals, energy, and industrial manufacturing companies to pharmaceuticals and materials science organizations, helping them navigate the intersection of process innovation, engineering, and business strategy.
Our team goes beyond compliance to identify opportunities for process optimization, efficiency improvements, and risk management, supporting organizations as they develop and scale innovative technologies. This role is particularly well suited for candidates interested in process engineering, manufacturing systems, product development, and applied industrial innovation, and who are eager to see how engineering advancements translate into real business value.
Your Key Responsibilities
When you join EY as an EDGE STEM R&D Credits Chemical Engineering Intern within Federal Tax Advisory (FTA), you will collaborate at the intersection of process engineering and applied research, supporting clients in documenting and substantiating their research and development (R&D) initiatives across industries such as chemicals, pharmaceuticals, energy, and advanced manufacturing.
This opportunity is well suited for those who are interested in applying their knowledge of process design, reaction engineering, thermodynamics, and material science in a consulting environment. You will gain exposure to real-world industrial processes, emerging technologies, and innovation strategies, while building both your technical expertise and commercial awareness.
You will be part of a collaborative, high-performing team of engineers, scientists, and tax professionals, contributing to a fast-growing practice focused on innovation and technology.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Leveraging your chemical engineering knowledge (e.g., process design, unit operations, reaction systems, and material properties) to identify and evaluate client R&D activities and innovation opportunities during technical discussions.
- Developing detailed technical narratives that document qualifying R&D efforts, translating complex engineering concepts such as process flow diagrams (PFDs), mass and energy balances, lab-scale and pilot-scale data into clear and structured analyses.
- Analyzing technical documentation, including experimental results, plant data, and scale-up studies, to assess development challenges related to yield optimization, process efficiency, product quality, and operational reliability.
- Collaborating cross-functionally with a global team of engineers, scientists, accountants, and legal professionals to deliver rigorous, high-quality analyses that support client research credit studies.
- Managing project timelines and deliverables, supporting multiple client engagements.
Skills and attributes for success
To qualify for the role, you must have:
- A predicted undergraduate or graduate degree in Chemical Engineering or a related field, supported by a strong academic record.
- A minimum 3.0 cumulative college/university GPA.
- A working knowledge of unit operations, reaction engineering, thermodynamics, transport phenomena, and process design, along with exposure to manufacturing processes and scale-up concepts.
- Ability to apply scientific methods and engineering techniques to evaluate process performance, analyze experimental or production data, and understand product and process development challenges (e.g., yield optimization, process efficiency, and product quality).
- An interest working in our team-led and leader-enabled hybrid model. Our expectation is for most people in external, client serving roles to work together in person 60% of the time over the course of an engagement, project or year.
- Access to reliable transportation to/from the EY office and client sites. A driver’s license is strongly recommended as ride share and public transportation options may not be available in all locations.
- The ability and willingness to travel and work in excess of standard hours when necessary. In certain circumstances, travel may be required beyond your work location based on client and project needs.
- You must reside within a commutable distance of the office location associated with this position.
- Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. without the need for employer sponsorship, now and in the future.
Ideally, you will have:
- A predicted advanced degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Architecture, Business Administration, Information Systems, or a related field.
- Cumulative college/university GPA of 3.2 or above.
- Relevant technical experience or coursework related to process engineering, reaction kinetics, separations, process simulation (e.g., Aspen, MATLAB), or laboratory/pilot-scale experimentation.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple technical workstreams, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, client-facing environment, both independently and within a team.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel (data analysis, modeling), Word (technical documentation), PowerPoint (presentations), and Teams, with the ability to communicate complex data clearly.
- Ability to translate complex chemical engineering concepts such as process flows, mass balances, and experimental results, into clear, structured technical narratives that highlight innovation and problem-solving.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Knowledge of how to leverage firm-approved AI tools in a business setting, including Microsoft Copilot to enhance productivity, streamline analysis, and support documentation in a business context.
